Main Town Hall (Ratusz Głównego Miasta)

About This Location

Stand at the corner where Ulica Długa meets Długi Targ and look up - this is the Main Town Hall, the old command room of Gdańsk. The location is no accident. This crossroads sits on the Royal Route, where processions, visiting rulers, and public ceremonies passed right under the windows of the people who ran the city. The building began in the Middle Ages - work is usually traced back to the fourteenth century, and it grew over time as the city grew richer. What you see today is a mix of Gothic bones and later upgrades. A key turning point was the great fire of 1556. After that, the town hall was rebuilt in a Renaissance style, turning municipal pride into architecture. Now move your attention to the tower. It rises to about 83 meters, making it one of the landmarks that helps you read the skyline of the Main City. Right at the top is a gilded figure - a life-size statue of the Polish king Sigismund the Second Augustus, placed there in 1561 like a shining political signature over the city. Listen for the bells. The tower has a carillon, and today the Main Town Hall instrument is a thirty-seven-bell set made in 2000 by the Dutch foundry Royal Eijsbouts. On the full hour, the sound drifts across the streets below and instantly turns the Old Town into a stage. If you go inside, the names of the rooms tell you how this place worked. The showpiece is the Great Council Hall, also called the Red Room, famous for its rich, ceremonial look. There is also the White Room, known as the Great Weta Hall, and the smaller “winter” council chamber - spaces designed for debate, negotiation, and the kind of decisions that could make or break a port city. Today, the building houses a city history museum, so the old seat of power has become a place where the city explains itself to visitors.
