On Fat Thursday, the last Thursday of carnival, Poles line up at bakeries for pączki, deep-fried yeast doughnuts filled with rose petal jam. The first of November is a public holiday, and families gather at cemeteries to tend relatives' graves and light candles, a practice Poland keeps more widely than most of the West.
