Walking central Kraków means walking a grid laid out in 1257, its lanes running to the Main Market Square, each side over 200 metres. A trumpeter sounds the hejnał bugle call from a church tower there every hour. It cuts off mid-note. To hear why, take an audio tour through the centre. Polish kings were crowned in Wawel Cathedral until 1764. Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter south of the centre, keeps its synagogues, one now a museum. Street carts sell obwarzanek, a chewy bread ring boiled before baking.
