The 9 Streets (De Negen Straatjes)

About This Location

Look around at the scale of these lanes. The whole charm of the 9 Streets is that everything feels close - narrow shopfronts, tiny bridges, and canal houses that seem to lean in as if they’re sharing secrets. This little district sits in the canal belt of Amsterdam, threaded between four famous waterways: Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, and the Singel. It stretches between Raadhuisstraat and Leidsegracht - right inside the UNESCO-listed canal ring, planned and built as Amsterdam expanded fast in the 17th century. Here’s the fun part: “The 9 Streets” is a modern name for a much older place. These streets have been promoted together under this shared label since the 1990s, but the buildings and street layout go back to the first half of the 1600s. That mix of old structure and new energy is exactly why it works. As you walk, notice how the streets change character every few steps. You’ll pass vintage and design shops, small galleries, and cafes squeezed into historic facades - more than 250 businesses packed into a compact grid, so something interesting is always a few doors away. Even the street names carry hidden clues. Several of them point back to older trades, especially the historic work with skins and leather that once filled this area with practical workshops rather than fashion stores. It’s a neat reminder that today’s shopping streets grew from real working-city Amsterdam. Before moving on, pause on one of the bridges and look down the canal line. This is one of the best places in the city to catch that classic view - water, brick, windows, and a single bike bell cutting through the air - and feel why this canal belt became world famous.
