Canal Story - Leaning Houses and Hooked Beams

About This Location

On the walk to the next stop, watch the canal houses closely. Many of them lean a little forward on purpose - it helps rainwater drip away from the facade, and it also makes lifting goods easier. Look up at the roofline and you’ll often see a lifting beam with a hook. That hook was the delivery system: furniture, barrels, and trade goods were hauled straight through the windows because the staircases inside are famously narrow.
