Dutch Comfort Food, Made for the Street

About This Location

Between stops, watch what people are eating on the move - Dutch “national” foods are often simple, fast, and perfect for street life. The most iconic is raw herring, usually served with chopped onion and pickles, held by the tail and eaten in a few bites at a fish stand. For something sweet, follow the smell of warm syrup: a stroopwafel is two thin waffles with caramel in the middle, best when it’s fresh and slightly soft. And if you want pure comfort, look for a cone of fries with a big dollop of mayonnaise, or bitterballen - crispy, creamy meat ragout snacks that show up in cafes with a beer.
