Amsterdam Chinatown (Zeedijk - Geldersekade)

About This Location

Stand near Zeedijk and look down the street. This is the heart of Amsterdam’s Chinatown - not huge, but packed with signs, scents, and small details that tell a bigger story. Chinatown here is not an official district with gates and borders, but the city center blocks around Zeedijk and Geldersekade have long been a real hub for Chinese and other Asian businesses. Look up at the street signs and you may spot Chinese characters beneath the Dutch. That is a modern nod to a community with deep roots here. The first Chinese residents settled in Amsterdam around 1911, and many early arrivals were connected to maritime work - sailors and shipping jobs around the nearby port areas. As you walk, notice how this area feels like a crossroads rather than a single-culture enclave. Restaurants and shops here reflect many Asian communities, so “Chinatown” is a convenient label, but the street life is broader than that. Now look for the most unexpected sight in this part of Amsterdam: the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple on Zeedijk. The rooflines and bright traditional details stand out sharply against the canal houses. The temple was completed in 2000, built in a traditional Chinese palace style, and it is often described as the largest such Buddhist temple in Europe. It was opened by Queen Beatrix on 15 September 2000, which helped make it a landmark not just for the neighborhood, but for the city. Pause for a second and listen to the street. This is also why Chinatown fits Amsterdam so well - the city has always been about trade routes, arrivals, and communities settling near water and work. Here, that story plays out in shop windows filled with spices and snacks, the rhythm of delivery bikes, and the steady flow of people heading between Nieuwmarkt, the canals, and the station.
