Old Boiler House (Kesselhaus) - Speicherstadt

About This Location

Look for the compact red brick building that feels industrial but carefully detailed. This is the Old Boiler House, often called the Kesselhaus. It was built in 1886 to 1887 to supply power for Speicherstadt, which was designed as a city within the city - with its own technical infrastructure, not only warehouses and canals. Here is the part that makes it easy to picture: Speicherstadt was one of the first areas in Hamburg where electric light became normal, and this building was a key reason why. The warehouse district was built for long working hours, fast handling of goods, and reliable systems, so energy was not a luxury. It was part of the trade machine. Now notice the contrast between past and present use. Today the building is the HafenCity Information Center, a place that explains how Hamburg’s waterfront is changing. If you choose to step inside, the highlight is a large, highly detailed scale model of HafenCity that helps you understand what is already built and what is still coming. Visiting is optional, but even from outside the building tells a clear story: Hamburg loves reusing working infrastructure instead of hiding it. Before moving on, take one more look upward. This building once had a stronger industrial silhouette, including chimneys that were later lost. Newer additions on the site reference that history, so the skyline hint you see today is also a memory of what powered the warehouse city.
